VIDEO: Schumacher wins first title after Hill collision
Michael Schumacher was crowned Formula 1 world drivers' champion for the first time on this day 25 years ago. The first of a record seven titles, Schumacher beat Damon Hill to the title after a season-ending Australian GP dripping with controversy. Article continues under video Schumacher had been disqualified from two races that season, and served a race ban for ignoring the first of those disqualifications - a black flag issued at the British GP. That had allowed Hill and Williams to close a huge gap that Schumacher had opened up amid a dominant start to the season.
