FIA creates points system for super licence

The FIA has released a points system that will be used for super licence applications from 2016. Following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in 2014, the FIA announced that it would be reviewing the super licence criteria after Max Verstappen was handed a race seat with Toro Rosso at the age of 17 off the back of one year of single seat racing in European F3. While a minimum age of 18 has been imposed, a new points system has also been created. A driver's finishing position in a number of championships will earn a set number of points, with a minimum of 40 points being required over a three-year period to earn a super licence.
