Why has Max Verstappen lost Gianpiero Lambiase in shock McLaren move?

In a shock move, Max Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase is set to leave Red Bull to join McLaren in 2028. The long-term plan is for Lambiase, who has worked with Verstappen since May 2016, to replace Andrea Stella as McLaren team principal. A merry-go-round is on the cards, with Stella reportedly high on Ferrari’s wishlist to take over from Frédéric Vasseur in the future. For Red Bull, the exit of Lambiase at the end of 2027 represents the departure of yet another major figure from the Milton Keynes-based team.
